BERLIN (AP) ? The German and Italian leaders issued a new pledge to protect the eurozone, while the influential eurogroup chairman was quoted Sunday as saying that officials have no time to lose and will decide in the coming days what measures to take.
The weekend comments capped a string of assurances from European leaders that they will do everything they can to save the 17-nation euro. They came before markets open for a week in which close attention will be focused on Thursday's monthly meeting of the European Central Bank's policy-setting governing council.
Last Thursday, ECB President Mario Draghi said the bank would do "whatever it takes" to preserve the euro ? and markets surged on hopes of action.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Premier Mario Monti "agreed that Germany and Italy will do everything to protect the eurozone" in a phone conversation Saturday, German government spokesman Georg Streiter said, a statement that was echoed by Monti's office.
That was nearly identical to a statement issued Friday by Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, which followed Draghi's comments.
Though they didn't pledge any specific action, the comments raised expectations that the ECB might step in to buy Spanish and perhaps Italian government bonds to lower the countries' borrowing costs, which have been worryingly high in recent weeks. Another possibility might be for the eurozone's temporary rescue fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, to buy bonds.
"What measures we will take, we will decide in the coming days," Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourg prime minister who also chairs meetings of the eurozone finance ministers, or eurogroup, was quoted as telling the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung. "We no longer have any time to lose."
Italy and Spain have the eurozone's third- and fourth-largest economies, respectively, behind Germany and France.
Merkel and Monti agreed that decisions made by last month's European Union summit "must be implemented as quickly as possible," Streiter said, again echoing Friday's Merkel-Hollande statement.
Those included allowing Europe's bailout fund ? once a new, independent bank supervisor is set up ? to give money directly to a country's banks, rather than via the government. Countries that pledge to implement reforms demanded by the EU's executive Commission also would be able to tap rescue funds without having to go through the kind of tough austerity measures demanded of Greece, Portugal and Ireland, which have had to get international bailout packages.
"I have no doubt that we will implement the decisions of the last summit," Juncker was quoted as saying. "It still has to be decided what exactly we will do when. That depends on the developments of the coming days and how fast we have to react."
"When I say 'we,' I mean the EFSF rescue fund ? that means the 17 euro countries," Juncker was quoted as saying. He added that they would coordinate closely with the ECB ? "and we will, as Draghi says, see results."
"I don't want to raise expectations," he said. "But I must say that we have arrived at a decisive point ... the euro countries have arrived a point where we must make extremely clear with all available means that we are determined to ensure the financial stability of the currency union."
Merkel's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, earlier dismissed talk that Spain might make an application to the EFSF to buy its bonds. He told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that "there is nothing to this speculation."
The latest assurances come as concern flares again about Greece. International debt inspectors are scrutinizing Greece's finances and its progress in implementing unpopular budget cuts and reforms demanded in exchange for the rescue loan program that is keeping the country afloat.
Greek officials have called for more time to implement the measures, but patience among creditors is running short. If the inspectors' report, expected in September, is damning, Athens could stop receiving loans and face bankruptcy and an exit from the 17-nation euro.
"The aid program is already very accommodating. I cannot see that there is still scope for further concessions," Schaeuble said.

?Operation Dirty Money? Bust Takes Down Workers Comp Fraud Ring
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ? Investigators say they?ve busted a worker?s compensation fraud ring in Broward County.
The investigation dubbed ?Operation Dirty Money? was a joint effort between Broward County deputies and the state division of insurance fraud.
At a news conference Friday, Broward County sheriff?s deputies showed off a million dollars they say they seized during their investigation.
Eight people face charges of workers compensation fraud and money laundering. They?re accused of being involved in a check cashing scheme to avoid the cost of worker?s comp coverage.
?Workers compensation premiums are based on the number of employees you report and your amount of payroll what these folks do is they intentionally go out they set up a company that is just on paper they insure it for the smallest workers comp they?re able to obtain,? Major Geoffrey Branch of the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud explained.
In this case, investigators say the fraud involved a construction company. Investigators say Hugo Rodriguez was the ringleader and allegedly funneled more than $70 million through shell companies to avoid paying workers? compensation coverage. In court, his bond was set at more than half a million dollars.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Rolling out red carpet for central bankers
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks took off at the end of the week, drawn by the allure of a helping hand from the world's two most powerful central banks. Traders are unlikely to resist those charms again next week.
The U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank both meet next week amid investor expectations of action to stimulate economic growth and, in the case of the ECB, tackle the spreading euro zone debt crisis.
The drumbeat of weak economic data and disappointing U.S. corporate profits and outlooks mean central banks can be stocks' best friends.
Equity prices tend to rise sharply in the hours before a Fed statement like the one expected on Wednesday as traders and investors jockey for position and a chance to make a profit.
Next week's calendar has a double-whammy. The Fed's monetary policy statement will come one day before an ECB meeting packed with intrigue. ECB President Mario Draghi said earlier this week the bank was ready to do whatever was necessary, within its mandate, to save the euro.
"People in this business like to get in front of big events, especially if (they) could be very, very positive for the market," said Brian Reynolds, chief market strategist at agency brokerage Rosenblatt Securities.
In that sense the strategy "is almost like a lottery ticket," he said.
But was that ticket already cashed? The S&P 500 <.spx><.inx> rallied to levels not seen since May on Friday, a rally that was sparked a day earlier after Draghi stoked expectations the ECB might resume its Securities Markets Programme (SMP) and possibly adopt more aggressive quantitative easing.
Reports of meetings with the head of Germany's Bundesbank fueled a Friday rally that outpaced Thursday's gains.
Equity markets have for weeks been leaning on hoped-for stimulus from the Fed or ECB. Despite weeks of softening economic data, including a dismal payrolls report for June and a poor outlook for corporate profits, the S&P 500 has risen in seven of the past 10 weeks. It closed on Friday near a three-month high.
REMARKABLE PATTERN
At the same time that traders position themselves to benefit from the Fed's latest easy-money policy, those betting against market gains get out of the way and selling pressure recedes.
"It's very scary to short the market ahead of a Fed meeting," said Dennis Dick, a proprietary trader at Las Vegas-based Bright Trading and co-founder of Premarketinfo.com. "So you have this short-covering that drives prices up."
That helps explain the rise in stocks in the 24 hours prior to the U.S. central bank's policy decisions - a pattern that tends to hold irrespective of what the Fed actually says in its statement.
Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York performed a study of the pattern.
Starting mid-afternoon the day before such decisions, stocks in the United States, Britain, Germany and other major markets begin a sharp rise and don't stop, on average, until just before the Fed unveils its policy decision at 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) the following day.
Since 1994 a whopping 80 percent of the premium in gains of U.S. stocks over yields on short-term government bonds has been earned in these 24-hour periods, the study found.
The pattern has grown starker as the Fed took increasingly aggressive actions to rescue the U.S. economy from recession. The two rounds of major asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, or QE1 and QE2, in recent years strongly boosted stocks.
"Perhaps this shows markets have given the Fed their seal of approval," said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
"At least from a market participant perspective, they are confident the Fed will fulfill its mandate. I try to talk to individual investors to remind them that the stock market is going to react much more quickly than the economy to what the Fed does," he said.
CENTRAL BANKS OVERSHADOW EARNINGS
The focus on central bank meetings will get in the way of a heavy week of earnings for S&P 500 companies at a time when the outlook continues to worsen.
Major companies due to report include AIG , Kellogg
Among the 290 companies in the S&P 500 index that have reported earnings for the second quarter, about 67 percent have beaten analysts' estimates, slightly higher than the long-term average of about 62 percent.
But just 40 percent have beaten on revenues, the worst record since the first quarter of 2009.
More worrisome is the market's outlook. Third-quarter earnings are now expected to decline 0.4 percent from a year ago, compared with an expected rise of 1.4 percent last week, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Also on investors' radar next week is another legal battle in California over patents between Apple and South Korea's Samsung . The trial's outcome could reshape the smartphone and tablet wars between the iPhone's maker and its rivals.

Munich survivor joins NY minute's silence
A survivor of the Israeli Olympic team massacred at the 1972 Munich games will join officials in New York for a moment of silence Friday.
Avi Melamed will join the Israeli Consul General of New York Ido Aharoni and a string of Jewish and local New York officials, a publicist said.
The event will coincide with the opening ceremony of the London games, where International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge has declined to hold an official minute's silence in commemoration of the attack 40 years ago.
Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches, as well as a West German police officer, were killed during an attack by Palestinian militants at the 1972 Summer Olympics.
On Wednesday, the widows of the Israeli victims urged spectators at the London opening to hold an unofficial minute's silence in their memory.
Rogge held an impromptu minute's silence when he toured the Athletes' Village in London on Monday, but the widows dismissed the gesture.

As news crews swarmed outside the tile-roofed house of accused shooter James Eagan Holmes? parents in an upscale suburb of San Diego, a stranger 1,300 miles away in Texas grieved for those inside.
?I?ve been worried about the family,? said Lois Robison, 78. ?I know what it?s like to find out your son has killed several people.?
Last Friday, when Holmes allegedly opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., his parents, Robert and Arlene Holmes, were instantly thrust into a club that no one wants to join: family members of notorious killers.
?
Like the parents of Tucson shooter Jared Loughner, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and Columbine High School killers Dylan?Klebold and Eric Harris, they?re quickly becoming pariahs, publicly reviled for raising a monster.
But a group organized on behalf of murder victims? families urges compassion and understanding for the families of murderers, too.?
They suffer in a different way than those who lose loved ones to violence, said Renny Cushing, founder and executive director of Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, or MVFHR, which has organized support sessions for killers' families. ?
?I became really painfully aware of the ostracism that takes place,? said Cushing, whose father was murdered in 1988. ?Immediately, there?s this thought that families must have done something to cause this, that the apple doesn?t fall far from the tree.?
That?s all too familiar to Robison, a retired third-grade teacher. Her son, Larry Keith Robison, was executed in 2000 in Texas for the grisly murders of five people, including an 11-year-old boy. He had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at age 21, three years before the 1982 murders.?
Though it?s been nearly 30 years since the crime, Robison still clearly recalls the shock and horror of the early days -- and the reaction of some in the community of Burleson, Texas. ?Reporters surrounded her home; in ensuing months, some parents asked to have their children removed from her class.
No longer were they Ken and Lois Robison, the local schoolteachers.
?We became the parents of a mass murderer,? said Robison.
It?s a shift that happens quickly as a restless public searches for someone or something to blame for senseless acts of murder, said Cushing.
Indeed, Arlene Holmes, 58, a registered nurse, and Robert Holmes, 61, a scientist, are being publicly reviled. Some Internet commenters have called them ?abusive? and suggested that they are responsible for their son's alleged acts.
Theater shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes appeared in court for the first time Monday where a judge explained why he was being held on no bond. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.
?Where were YOU Mother why didn?t you take care of him,? read one NBCNews.com comment. ?To me it sounds like a bad mother.?
Another expressed ?pity? for the family -- but with a twist:
?I know that if it had been one of my sons who did this I would be absolutely shattered (not that it could ever be one of them as there must have been signs.)?
The Holmes family has expressed sorrow for the 12 people killed and 58 injured in the attacks, and, through their lawyer, asked for privacy as they grapple with the situation.
They indicated they would stand by their son through the ordeal.
?I think anyone can imagine how they?re feeling, anyone who?s ever been a parent,? said lawyer and family spokeswoman Lisa Damiani at a press conference Monday.

As many as 12 people were killed and 50 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie.
Families of murderers are grief-stricken after such a tragedy, but, unlike the families of the victims, they may feel they have no right to their feelings, said Bud Welch, whose 23-year-old daughter, Julie, was killed in the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995.
Welch met with Bill McVeigh, the father of Timothy McVeigh, who was executed for the crime.
?It?s really difficult for them, it really is,? said Welch, a member of MVFHR, which opposes the death penalty for murderers.??Bill McVeigh can never say anything publicly about anything Tim did that was nice.?
Instead, the family members of the killers struggle for the rest of their lives with shame and guilt over their loved one?s acts.
?I said, 'Bill, you have nothing to apologize for. You did not do it. You did not contribute to it,' "?Welch recalled.
That message has provided some solace to other families of murderers. Welch met with the parents of Eric Harris, one of the two killers who led, and died in, the 1999 Columbine High School shootings.
Public sentiment vilified Wayne and Kathy Harris, Eric?s parents, and also Tom and Sue Klebold, the parents of Dylan Klebold, the other Columbine shooter.
?People were so angry. They said, ?How were those boys raised??? Welch said. ?They weren?t raised any damn different than any of the kids in Littleton.?
Lois Robison said she and her husband, Ken, now 81, have found comfort and empowerment in speaking out about their son's crime, and about the need for adequate care for mental illness. They had great support from family members and those in the community who knew them, she added.
"When this happened, my husband said 'We can do one of two things,'" Lois Robison recalls. "We can crawl into a cave and pull a rock in there behind us. Or we can tell the truth and try to keep it from happening to someone else.'"
Bud Welch said he?s tempted now to reach out to victims of Aurora, both the families of those who were killed -- and the family of the alleged killer.
?These family members in Aurora, they?re going through so much grief. They need so much help,? he said. ?The family of shooter? God only knows they?re going through hell, too.?
