Taos Ski Valley : Breast Cancer Awareness Day

K2 Bumps Challenge

K2 Bumps Challenge ? Photo by Thatcher Dorn

Taos Ski Valley, Studio Karina and K2 have once again joined forces to host a Breast Cancer Awareness Day, to take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Taos Ski Valley.

The day-long celebration of women?s health will consist of two fundraising events that will benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), a nonprofit, youth-focused foundation whose mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle and the Anita Salas Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance for breast cancer services in New Mexico.

In the last three years, the events have raised more than $43,000 for the causes.

The first event, K2 Bumps Challenge, is a fun and challenging skiing/snowboarding competition in which individuals or teams of two raise money through their online sponsorship page, based on the number of times they are able to ski Al?s Run ? one of Taos Ski Valley?s most famous and popular mogul runs ? in the allotted timeframe.

Those who raise the most money and ski the most runs will win prizes.

The K2 Bumps Challenge awards ceremony will take place directly following the event in the Martini Tree Bar in the resort center at the base of the mountain, followed by an unrivaled art exhibit.

Now in its fourth year, Taos Ski Valley and Studio Karina will once again host Paint for Peaks, a snowboard art auction featuring custom, one-of-a-kind painted snowboards created by renowned local and regional artists.

All proceeds from the art sale will go to B4BC and the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. K2 has donated the snowboards that will serve as the canvases and notable artists including Gustavo Victor Goler, JD Challenger, Jim Vogel, Jolene Yazzie, Ira Lujan, Jonathan Sobol and Marianne Fahrney have committed to creating works of art.

?The Breast Cancer Awareness Day celebration at Taos Ski Valley has grown into a favorite for locals and visitors alike, because it offers something for everyone and supports a crucial cause,? said Adriana Blake, administrative manager of Taos Ski Valley. ?We invite everyone to spend the day with us to either take in the exciting race action, peruse one-of-a-kind works of art or both. We are hopeful we can meet and exceed our fundraising milestones from the past three years for the important B4BC and Anita Salas organizations.?

Teams interested in participating in the K2 Bumps Challenge can sign up online after January 1, 2013.

The teams that raise the most money for B4BC and the Anita Salas Memorial Fund and complete Al?s Run the most times will win prizes. In addition, each team will receive select K2 gear.

Paint for Peaks will open to the public at 4 p.m. on Feb. 23. Music, entertainment and the auction are free to attend, and a cash bar will be available.

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Recalling the shooting of 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind a legislative package next year aimed at containing gun violence.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama voiced skepticism about proposals to place armed guards at schools in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 deadly assault at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

In his boldest terms yet, he vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence and said he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high capacity bullet magazines.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said. "So what I intend to do is I will call all the stakeholders together. I will meet with Republicans. I will meet with Democrats. I will talk to anybody.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids. And, yes, it's going to be hard."

Obama's comments come as the schoolroom shooting has elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention.

Six adults also died at the school. Authorities say the shooter killed himself and his mother at their home.

The slayings have prompted renewed calls for greater gun controls. The National Rifle Association has resisted those efforts vociferously, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection.

"I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," Obama said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

Obama said he intended to press the issue with the public.

"Will there be resistance? Absolutely there will be resistance," he said.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away. It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Besides getting gun violence legislation passed next year, Obama also listed immigration as a top priority for 2013 as well as deficit reduction. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled back plan that avoids across the board tax increases for virtually all Americans.

He issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates for new secretary of defense.

Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Many liberals and gay activists also have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision on a secretary of defense but said called Hagel a "patriot."

"He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate," he said. "Somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam. And is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

He noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark. "And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country," Obama said.

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

(AP) ? Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence.

Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association's proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press."

Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," he added. "And, yes, it's going to be hard."

The president added that he's ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.

The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.

The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.

Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," he said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

The president said he intends to press the issue with the public.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away," Obama said. "It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Separately, a member of the president's cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. "I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation," Vilsack said on CNN.

Vilsack said he thinks it's possible for Americans to come together. "It's potentially a unifying conversation," he said. "The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified."

Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.

In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a "patriot."

Hagel "served this country with valor in Vietnam," the president said. "And (he) is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

Stocks extend losses ahead of 'fiscal cliff' talks

1 day

Stocks took another beating for the fifth-consecutive session Friday, with the Dow logging its worst weekly drop in six, after a report that President Barack Obama said he is not going to make a new budget offer during the "fiscal cliff" summit at the White House.

Instead, Obama plans to lay out what is clear can pass with a majority in both the House and Senate and what most American people support, which includes protecting everyone making $250,000 and less from seeing their taxes go up.

The?Dow Jones Industrial Average?dropped 158.20 points, or 1.21 percent, to close at 12.938.11, dragged down?by?Hewlett-Packard?and?ExxonMobil.

The?S&P 500?slumped 15.67 points, or 1.11 percent, to end at 1,402.43. The?Nasdaq?declined 25.60 points, or 0.86 percent, to finish at 2,960.31. The?CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, spiked to close above 22 for the first time since June.

For the week, the?Dow?tumbled 1.92 percent, the?S&P 500?fell 1.94 percent, and the?Nasdaq?dropped 2.01 percent. Most Dow components ended in the red for the week, dragged by?Hewlett-Packard?and?Microsoft, while?Bank of America?squeezed out a small gain.

"Traders are so cautious and investors are also worried," said Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners.?

President Barack Obama?met with a bi-partisan group of congressional leaders?at the White House, just days before the deadline to reach a deal or see the a series of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes come into force. If a deal is not possible, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Earlier, stocks came off their lows as investors latched onto a glimmer of hope amid reports of?progress toward a potential deal. According to sources, negotiations revolved around permitting taxes to rise to Clinton-era levels on incomes above $400,000, the level in Obama's last offer to Republican House Speaker John Boehner before their negotiations fell apart earlier this month.

Hewlett-Packard?confirmed that the Justice Department is looking into its allegations that?Autonomy?engaged in accounting fraud prior to its acquisition by HP last year.

Apple?dipped after a Chinese court fined the iPhone maker $160,000 for hosting third-party applications on its App Store that were selling pirated electronic books, Xinhua news agency said. Apple shares have declined nearly 25 percent in the last three months. The stock hit an all-time high of $705 in mid-September.

Barnes & Noble?jumped after British publisher?Pearson?said it will buy a 5 percent stake in the bookstore chain's digital Nook and college bookstore businesses for $89.5 million. Separately, Barnes & Noble said it expects holiday sales to be below forecasts and that its Nook business will not meet prior full-year 2013 projections.

Among airlines, Raymond James raised its price target on?Delta Airlines,?Southwest Airlines,?U.S. Airways,?Spirit Airlines?and?Alaska Air.

On the economic front, pending home sales rose to the highest level in more than 2-1/2 years, climbing 1.7 percent in November, according to the National Association of Realtors.?

And the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago said its index of Midwest business activity rose to 51.6 in December from 50.4 in November, edging past expectations for 51.0.

The Salem Witch Society | Crime Fiction Lover

Written by KN Shields ? There have been numerous blends of supernatural fantasy and crime fiction in recent years, but don?t worry, this book takes place in the matter-of-fact world of the New England freelance detective Perceval Grey, and deputy marshal Archie Lean. They?re based in Portland, the state capital of Maine, and the year is 1892. Things get off to a grisly start when Lean is called out to a crime scene ? and quite a scene it is. The mutilated and bitten (yes, bitten) body of a prostitute is found in a workshop in the poor part of town. Her corpse has been pinned to the ground with a pitchfork and configured into the five points of a satanic pentagram like the one on the book?s cover.

Mayor Ingraham is aghast, and agrees to involve Grey in the case. An occult killer loose in Portland is not a vote winner, even though he has little sympathy for the deceased woman. Grey and Lean go about things in a manner reminiscent of Holmes and Watson, and are joined at times by single mother Helen Prescott. She?s the niece of the coroner Dr Steig, and both are drawn to the case. The whiskered doctor is interested not only in pathology but also psychiatry, having treated many Civil War veterans. Prescott, meanwhile, works at the Portland Public Library, which hosts the Maine Historical Society, and they?ve been commemorating the bicentenary of the Salem Witch Trials.

There seems to be a connection between the case and New England?s witchcraft heritage, but Grey, Lean and Prescott have a hard time discerning what the link is. Members of the local Temperance Union convolute matters by trying to silence a witness who?s seen the prostitute with her John, meanwhile the leader of a local occult group is extremely unhelpful. Perhaps these people have something to hide?

Further gruesome murders are discovered but it seems Grey and Lean are the only ones who can see how the cases are connected. Gradually the mayor loses interest in solving the girl?s murder, and he loses his patience with Grey and Lean too. However the pair carry on to the bitter end and the story involves visits to an opium den, a witch?s hilltop hovel, the Portland Observatory, a cathedral and several down and dirty taverns. There?s a bit of grave robbing too, for good measure.

The Salem Witch Society is more than a book, it presents a whole world fascinatingly crafted by KN Shields. He is an expert on Victorian Maine and describes the city in vivid detail. Similarly, his research into what happened in Salem, Massachusetts back in 1692, gives pattern to the storyline. The killer has taken inspiration from these events and truly believes in The Black Man. At times, however, the extensive detail dulls the sharpness of the story. Just as you?re hooked by the intrigue of the plot, a new wave of exposition washes away some of the intensity. For me, it wanted a touch more pace.

The characters are wonderfully drawn. Perceval Grey, for instance, turns out to be half-Native American. Raised by an upper-class, white grandfather, he had the finest of educations, and takes a superior bearing with him wherever he goes. Yet he knows the language of the local Indian tribe, and is at times treated as they are, like an unwanted gypsy. And, of course, native people were thought to be in league with the Devil by the Puritans in Salem, which adds another twist to Grey?s involvement. Lean, meanwhile, brings some heart to sit beside Grey?s intellect. He?ll act on instinct and emotion. He?s married, leaving Grey to the potential love interest with Helen Prescott.

Cleverly written, complex and lengthy, this is one for lovers of historical crime fiction. If you?re craving a New World take on Sherlock Holmes which is more Conan Doyle than Downey Jr, with a sprinkling of Gothic horror, you will also enjoy this book. There?s a rich world to discover in its pages, and the characters Shields has conjured up leave plenty of scope for further Perceval Grey mysteries. It?s released 3 January.

Real Estate: Housing recovery to continue in 2013 | Fresno Bee ...

The tumultuous Valley real estate market hit a turning point on the road to recovery this year when home prices started a consistent climb.

The market also saw mortgage interest rates remain at historic lows, increased buyer demand as a result of fewer homes for sale and a slowdown in foreclosure activity too.

So, what does that mean for real estate in 2013?

Local Realtors are optimistic that these factors will bring good tidings for next year, but a housing expert says to be careful ? more foreclosures could be in store.

John Shamshoian, the newly elected president of the Fresno Association of Realtors remains positive that home sales will pick up in the new year.

?Traditional sales rose significantly in 2012 and that trend should continue,? Shamshoian said. And ?more home sellers have regained enough equity to sell their current home and take advantage of this market to purchase a more expensive home.?

Other buyers, like those who have reestablished their credit after a foreclosure, are also now qualifying for new loans, Shamshoian said.

But how about that shadow inventory of foreclosures rumored for years now to explode into the market?

Shamshoian doesn?t expect foreclosures to increase much based on this year?s activity which showed half the number of foreclosures compared to 2011.

But Fresno State?s housing expert Andrew Hansz, the director of the Gazarian Real Estate Center said ?expect inventories to rise as we work through more of the distressed properties.?

The market isn?t on track for a full recovery yet and could get more complicated as the federal government works on its fiscal cliff issues, Hansz said.

?The key to a sustainable real estate market recovery is job growth,? Hansz said. ?The uncertainty caused by the fiscal cliff issues we currently face is not conducive to business expansion and job growth? 2013 could be an unlucky year as the fiscal cliff is a direct and immediate threat to our economy and a real estate market recovery.?

Learn The Ins And Outs Of Commercial Real Estate ... - Maynas Eric

Any newcomer to the commercial real estate market can benefit from a compilation of hints and tips on the most effective ways to purchase or sell commercial property. Below is a compilation of suggestions that will help anyone interested in a successful commercial real estate venture achieve their goals.

You can find different kinds of brokers. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. Consider hiring a tenant-only broker as he?ll have the most experience in dealing with situations such as yours.

Pay attention to the location of a property. When investing in a property, consider what type of neighborhood it is located in. Look at the growth of areas that are similar. You need to be sure that in five to ten years later, the area will still be growing.

TIP! If you are viewing more than one property, you may wish to create a checklist for each site. Determine which properties initially make the cut, but once you do, let those property owners know.

This is necessary in order to confirm that the terms reflect the rent roll as well as the property?s documentation. If you don?t do this verification, you won?t notice any term not considered by the rent roll, and the pro forma could be changed.

When entering the commercial real estate market, patience is perhaps your best ally. Don?t invest in a hurry. You may soon regret it when the property does not fulfill your goals. Be prepared to wait as much as a year for a suitable property to come available in your area.

TIP! Know your goals for a potential property when you are buying commercial real estate. Will you be utilizing this property for yourself, or do you intend on renting it out? Be sure that you have goals that are specific and clear when you look for commercial property, as this can save you plenty of effort and time.

Ask your real estate broker how they measure success and failure to determine if you have hired the correct one. Ask them how their results are measured. You should be on board with their techniques and strategies. You need to share the same strategies and beliefs as your real estate broker in order to work successfully with them.

Make sure you have everything together for your business when you are going to buy commercial real estate. Make sure you have an idea of the type of office space that you want to work in. If you see your company growing in the future, you should consider buying additional space now while the real estate market is at its lowest, this helps you to save money down the road.

Assess what you need before you look for commercial properties. List all of the features that are necessary for your operations, such as the overall size requirements for your rooms and amount of restrooms required.

TIP! Be sure to have a professional building inspector go through your property before you put it up for sale. Repair any problems that the inspector finds immediately.

Take the time to gain the available knowledge to better recognize an advantageous deal. Those who are pros at real estate can quickly tell a great deal from a bad one. Part of their expert knowledge includes knowing when not to make a deal and preparing an exit strategy to extricate themselves. They can also quickly spot damages needing repair, have the ability to calculate risk and can do the calculations that let them know for sure that their monetary objectives will be fulfilled by the property in question.

Hopefully the information contained in this article will help you to build a foundation of knowledge off which you can grow to profitable heights. While tricky, these tips should have given some good grounding in what you need to know.

Online Fax Messaging Is The Future of Business Communication ...

In this day and age where information is instantly accessible and communication is made simpler through technology, your business needs to adapt accordingly by upgrading your landline to a business phone system. With features like fax messaging through the web, call waiting, call forwarding and so much more, business phones are definitely the way to go. If you already have a fax machine, you may think that it?s impractical to upgrade when the old machine still works. In fact, most bills are still paid via the use of a fax machine. The thing is, you may be limiting yourself to opportunities for increased revenue and strengthening your network between you and your clients, customers and even your employees. With the technology that Internet fax messaging offers, you may discover new ways to improve and uplift your business!

Picture this: You need to send an important document to someone with very little time on your hands, and in the middle of sending the message, your fax machine encounters a problem such as paper jamming or running out of ink. With fax messaging via the web, these problems are virtually eliminated. Internet fax messaging is a way to transmit fax messages without the need for a traditional fax machine. Many businesses with phone systems are now making use of Internet fax messaging because of the multitude of benefits it offers. Here are some reasons why you should consider upgrading to a phone system with Internet fax capabilities:

It?s cost-effective. Having a phone system with features such as online fax messaging dramatically reduces the costs incurred by traditional faxing. Exorbitant phone bills from lengthy long-distance and international calls are eliminated, as well as maintenance and costs for general upkeep of your equipment because Internet faxing is free. The only thing you need to pay is your monthly subscription to your Internet service provider of choice. It is also better on the environment, because you do not have to use paper or ink to send a fax.

It?s efficient. You will find that with a business phone system with fax capabilities, your business will be afforded freedom of mobility to access important files even while on the go. In fact, Internet faxing can even send and receive files from a traditional fax machine. You simply have to turn on your computer, laptop, smartphone or other mobile device to access the Internet and you can send and receive the files you need in a reasonable amount of time with little to no room for error.

Depending on the needs of your company, you can easily find online fax providers (RingCentral offers this kind of online service) that can let you send faxes for free! Consider subscribing to a phone system with online faxing capabilities to make life easier for you and your business.

(AP) ? The top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land celebrated the United Nations' recent recognition of a Palestinian state in his annual pre-Christmas homily on Monday, saying that while the road to actual freedom from Israeli occupation remains long, the Palestinian homeland has been born.

Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal told followers at the patriarchate's headquarters in Jerusalem's Old City that this year's festivities were doubly joyful, celebrating "the birth of Christ our Lord and the birth of the state of Palestine."

"The path (to statehood) remains long, and will require a united effort," added Twal, a Palestinian citizen of Jordan.

From Jerusalem, he set off in a procession for the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Jesus' traditional birthplace. There, he was reminded that life on the ground for Palestinians has not really changed since the U.N. recognized their state last month in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Twal had to enter the biblical city through a massive metal gate in the barrier of towering concrete slabs Israel built between Jerusalem and Bethlehem during a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in the last decade.

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the statehood bid, saying it was a Palestinian ploy to bypass negotiations. Talks stalled four years ago, primarily over Israel's construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories Israel occupied in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel has rejected the Palestinians' demand that it freeze all construction before they will renew talks, and launched a major settlement building push in retaliation for the successful statehood bid.

Hundreds of people were on hand to greet Twal in Manger Square, outside the Church of Nativity. The mood was festive under sunny skies, with children dressed in holiday finery or in Santa costumes, and marching bands playing in the streets.

A lavishly decorated 55-foot (25-meter) fir tree with a nativity scene at its foot dominated the plaza. Festivities were to culminate with Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where tradition says Jesus was born.

Devout Christians said it was a moving experience to be so close to the origins of their faith.

"It's a special feeling to be here, it's an encounter with my soul and God," said Joanne Kurczewska, a professor at Warsaw University in Poland, who was visiting Bethlehem for a second time at Christmas.

Christmas is the high point of the year in Bethlehem, which, like the rest of the West Bank, is struggling to recover from the economic hard times that followed the violent Palestinian uprising against Israel that broke out in late 2000.

Tourists and pilgrims who had been scared away by the fighting have been returning in larger numbers. Last year's Christmas Eve celebration produced the highest turnout in more than a decade, with some 100,000 visitors, including foreign workers and Arab Christians from Israel.

The Israeli Tourism Ministry predicts a 25 percent drop from that level this year, following last month's clash between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, which put a chill on tourist arrivals. Foreign tourists heading to Bethlehem must pass through Israel or the Israel-controlled border crossing into the West Bank from Jordan.

Young children are often victims of gunfire in US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Before 20 first-graders were massacred at school by a gunman in Newtown, Conn., first-grader Luke Schuster, 6, was shot to death in New Town, N.D. Six-year-olds John Devine Jr. and Jayden Thompson were similarly killed in Kentucky and Texas.

Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, died in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., while 6-year-old Kammia Perry was slain by her father outside her Cleveland home, according to an Associated Press review of 2012 media reports.

Yet there was no gunman on the loose when Julio Segura-McIntosh died in Tacoma, Wash. The 3-year-old accidentally shot himself in the head while playing with a gun he found inside a car.

As he mourned with the families of Newtown, President Barack Obama said the nation cannot accept such violent deaths of children as routine. But hundreds of young child deaths by gunfire ? whether intentional or accidental ? suggest it might already have.

Between 2006 and 2010, 561 children age 12 and under were killed by firearms, according to the FBI's most recent Uniform Crime Reports. The numbers each year are consistent: 120 in 2006; 115 in 2007; 116 in 2008, 114 in 2009 and 96 in 2010. The FBI's count does not include gun-related child deaths that authorities have ruled accidental.

"This happens on way too regular a basis and it affects families and communities ? not at once, so we don't see it and we don't understand it as part of our national experience," said Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.

The true number of small children who died by gunfire in 2012 won't be known for a couple of years, when official reports are collected and dumped into a database and analyzed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects to release its 2011 count in the spring.

In response to what happened in Newtown, the National Rifle Association, the nation's largest gun lobby, suggested shielding children from gun violence by putting an armed police officer in every school by the time classes resume in January.

"Politicians pass laws for gun-free school zones ... They post signs advertising them and in doing so they tell every insane killer in America that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk," said NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre.

Webster said children are more likely to die by gunfire at home or in the street. They tend to be safer when they are in school, he said.

None of the 61 deaths reviewed by The Associated Press happened at school.

Children die by many other methods as well: violent stabbings or throat slashings, drowning, beating and strangulation. But the gruesome recounts of gun deaths, sometimes just a few paragraphs in a newspaper or on a website, a few minutes on television or radio, bear witness that firearms too, are cutting short many youngsters' lives.

One week before the Newtown slayings, Alyssa Celaya, 8, bled to death after being shot by her father with a .38-caliber gun at the Tule River Indian Reservation in California. Her grandmother and two brothers also were killed, a younger sister and brother were shot and wounded. The father shot and killed himself amid a hail of gunfire from officers.

Delric Miller's life ended at 9 months and Angel Mauro Cortez Nava's at 14 months.

Delric was in the living room of a home on Detroit's west side Feb. 20 when someone sprayed it with gunfire from an AK-47. Other children in the home at the time were not injured.

Angel was cradled in his father's arms on a sidewalk near their home in Los Angeles when a bicyclist rode by on June 4 and opened fire, killing the infant.

Most media reports don't include information on the type of gun used, sometimes because police withhold it for investigation purposes.

Gun violence and the toll it is taking on children has been an issue raised for years in minority communities.

The NAACP failed in its attempt to hold gun makers accountable through a lawsuit filed in 1999. Some in the community raised the issue during the campaign and asked Obama after he was re-elected to make reducing gun violence, particularly as a cause of death for young children, part of his second-term agenda.

"Now that it's clear that no community in this country is invulnerable from gun violence, from its children being stolen ... we can finally have the national conversation we all need to have," said Ben Jealous, president of the NAACP.

This year's gun deaths reviewed by the AP show the problem is not confined to the inner city or is simply the result of gang or drug violence, as often is the perception.

Faith Ehlen, 22 months, Autumn Cochran, 10, and Alyssa Cochran, 11, all died Sept. 6. Their mother killed them with the shotgun before turning it on herself. Police said she had written a goodbye email to her boyfriend before killing the children in DeSoto, Mo., a community of about 6,300.

In Dundee, Ore., Randall Engels used a gun to kill his estranged wife Amy Engels and son Jackson, 11, as they ate pizza on the Fourth of July. An older sibling of Jackson's also was killed. Engels then committed suicide. The town of more than 5,000 people boasts on its website that it is a semirural town with "the cultural panache of a big city."

Many of the children who died in 2012 were shot with guns that belonged to their parents, relatives or baby sitters, or were simply in the home. Webster said children's accidental deaths by guns have fallen since states passed laws requiring that guns be locked away from youths or have safeties to keep them from firing.

But even people trained in gun use slip up ? and the mistakes are costly.

A Springville, Utah, police officer had a non-service gun in his home that officials said did not have external safeties. His 2-year-old son found the gun and shot himself on Sept. 11. The names of the father and son were not released at the time of the shooting.

Obama has tapped Vice President Joe Biden to shape the administration's response to the Newtown massacre. The administration will push to tighten gun laws, many that have faced resistance in Congress for years. The solutions may include reinstating a ban on assault-style rifles, closing gun buying background check loopholes and restricting high-capacity magazines.

Those may have limited effect for children like Amari Markel-Purrel Perkins, of Clinton, Md. He shot himself in the chest on April 9 with a gun that an adult had stashed inside a Spiderman backpack.

Like most of the child victims at Newtown, Amari was 6.

Norquist: Obama, Dems using Newtown for 'political purposes'

National Rifle Association board member and president of Americans for Tax Reform Grover Norquist said on Sunday that President Obama and Democrats are politicizing the Newtown tragedy by pushing for gun control.

"We ought to calm down and not take tragedies like this, crimes like this, and use them for political purposes," Norquist told me on "This Week." "President Obama has been president for four years. If he thought some gun control could solve this problem, he should have been pushing it years ago."

"Democrats had a majority in the House and a supermajority in the House and the Senate for the first two years that they were in office. If they thought that this was really an important issue they might have done something then. They didn't," he added.

Read a full transcript of this week's show HERE.

On Wednesday, Obama announced that Vice President Joe Biden would head a task force of leaders from across the country to evaluate solutions to reduce gun violence.

Norquist endorsed the recommendation made by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at a press conference on Friday to place armed guards in schools across the country.

Other members of the political roundtable pushed for what they called "common sense" gun laws.

Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker, who is a member of the pro-gun control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said that there is more agreement than disagreement on measures to stop the mentally ill and criminals from acquiring weapons.

"I don't know if anybody here has seen somebody shot - I have," Booker said. "I don't know if anybody here has had to put their hand in somebody's chest, and try to stop the bleeding so that person doesn't die-I have. What frustrates me about this debate is that it is a false debate."

"Most of us in America including gun owners agree on things that would stop the kind of carnage that is going on in cities all across America," Booker said, adding that loopholes that allow criminals to buy guns in "secondary markets" should be closed.

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan said that LaPierre's suggestion that the effect of a violent culture on the mentally ill has contributed to increased gun violence, but she believes that Congress should pursue some gun control measures.

"I am for the banning of the extended magazines and extended clips," Noonan said.

Editor and Publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel said that focusing on the mentally ill is a distraction from the issue of gun violence.

"The mental illness argument has been used to evade action," vanden Huevel said. "More guns and bullets, more dead children."

Hillsborough disaster tribute tops UK Christmas chart

LONDON (Reuters) - A tribute song to the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster has taken the number one spot on Britain's Christmas pop chart.

"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", a version of the ballad that was a worldwide hit for The Hollies, went to the top of the chart in its first week of release.

Money raised by the single will go to the families of the 96 Liverpool soccer fans killed in Britain's worst sporting disaster in Sheffield, northern England.

The song features performances by artists including Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, the Clash's Mick Jones and Peter Hooton of The Farm. They came together under the name The Justice Collective.

The Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundown, said on Sunday that the song beat a strong challenge from James Arthur, a newcomer who won this year's "The X-Factor", a music talent show. His single "Impossible" was last week's number one.

Relatives of those killed at Hillsborough have campaigned for 23 years to overturn official accounts of what caused the deaths. Police had blamed rowdy, drunken fans for contributing to the crush. Many of the victims were children and teenagers.

A government-backed inquiry concluded in September that police had smeared supporters to cover up their failings, helped by inaccurate media coverage.

Britain's High Court quashed the original "accidental death" inquest verdicts on December 19 and ordered a new investigation. The government also set up a new police inquiry. (Reporting by Peter Griffiths; Editing by Robin Pomeroy)

ROME (AP) ? After keeping Italians, and the rest of Europe, in suspense for weeks, caretaker Premier Mario Monti on Sunday ruled out campaigning in February elections, but said he would consider leading the next government if politicians who share his focus on reform request it.

The decision positions him to take the helm again without having to get into the political nitty-gritty of an election ? preserving his image as someone above the fray who can make tough decisions on imposing austerity. His previous measures have boosted confidence in Italy's finances, and fellow European leaders have made no secret they want to keep them in place.

Silvio Berlusconi, the scandal-tainted ex-premier considering another run, commented scathingly on Monti's openness to another term.

"I had a nightmare ? still having a government with Monti," the media mogul said in an interview on state TV. He has said in the past that he would run again if Monti did not, but made no commitment Sunday about his own political future.

Monti, who after his resignation Friday is continuing in a caretaker role, ruled out heading any ticket ? even a center-right grouping that Berlusconi said he would be willing to back.

But the 69-year-old economist made it clear he was willing to take another turn in power.

"If one or more political forces is credibly backing (my) agenda or even has a better one, I'd evaluate the offer," Monti said during a news conference.

"To those forces who demonstrate convincing and credible adherence to the Monti agenda, I am ready to give my appreciation, encouragement, and if requested, leadership, and I am ready to assume, one day, if the circumstances require it, the responsibility that would be entrusted to me by Parliament."

Monti refused to head any ticket himself, saying "I have no sympathy for 'personal' parties."

Italy is struggling to shore up its finances and emerge from recession, a challenge made harder by its volatile politics. The country has had dozens of governments over the years that let tax evasion spread, avoided unpopular reforms like raising the retirement age, and allowed public spending to balloon.

Monti was appointed in November 2011 to head a non-elected government with the goal of saving Italy from a Greece-style debt debacle after financial markets lost faith in his populist predecessor, Berlusconi.

Berlusconi triggered Monti's resignation last week, a few months ahead of the term's end, when he yanked his Freedom Party's support in Parliament for the government. Parliament was then sent packing last week by Italy's president, and elections scheduled for Feb. 24-25.

Monti's announcement Sunday pleased some parties but irked others.

"Yet again, Monti shows himself to be arrogant and (Pontius) Pilate-like," said Antonio Borghesi, a leader of the small center-left party that refused to back him during Monti's 13 months at the head of a non-elected government. "He won't directly commit himself, but he doesn't rule out that his name be used by others who share his agenda and he gives his willingness, if asked, to again be leader the country."

The tiny centrist Italy Future party, meanwhile, hailed Monti as a "great political leader and international statesman," and said in a statement: "We reiterate our willingness to back with pride the agenda of Premier Monti."

The party's leaders include pro-Vatican politicians and industrialists, notably Luca di Montezemolo, president of Ferrari, the Italian Formula One racing team.

Monti said he was spurning Berlusconi's offer to sit out the election if Monti would head a center-right ticket. He expressed bewilderment at Berlusconi's sharp condemnation of his economic policies and his seemingly contradictory offer to back another Monti-led government.

"Yesterday, we read that he assessed the work of the (Monti) government to be a complete disaster. A few days earlier I read flattering things," Monti said of his predecessor. The logic "escapes me" Monti said, drawing chuckles.

Berlusconi has said he would try for a fourth term as premier if Monti doesn't run, even though he continues to face several legal and sex-related scandals.

Monti praised Parliament for backing his government's recipe of spending cuts, new taxes and pension reform, which he said saved Italy from the debt crisis.

"Italians as citizens can hold their heads up high in Europe," Monti said, noting Italy had avoided the bailouts that Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Cyprus have had to take.

Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano dissolved Parliament after Monti resigned Friday following approval of the country's national budget law. Monti noted that as a senator-for-life, he remains in Parliament and doesn't need to run for a seat in the legislature.

Voter opinion polls indicate a centrist ticket backing Monti would take about 15 percent of the vote, meaning any government he heads would need support from either of Italy's two largest political groupings: the center-right, led by Berlusconi, or the center-left, led by Pier Luigi Bersani.

After Monti's announcement Sunday, Bersani, whose forces turned out to be Monti's staunchest proponent this past year, vowed to keep up the premier's anti-crisis efforts.

By declining to directly campaign for February's balloting, Monti avoids a direct clash with him. On Sunday, Monti would only would say that Bersani is a highly "legitimate candidate for premier of a coalition."

In an interview on state TV later Sunday, Monti declined to say if he thought his agenda would get more backing from Bersani's or from Berlusconi's supporters.

Some had speculated that Monti had his sights set on the Italian presidency, since Napolitano's term ends this spring. But Monti ruled that out.
