WinLaunch Brings OS X's Launchpad to Windows

WinLaunch Brings OS X's Launchpad to Windows

Windows: It might not be the fastest way to launch apps, but OS X's Launchpad is intuitive and easy for everyone to understand. If you're hoping to get the same feature on your Windows machine, WinLaunch is the solution.

Once you install WinLaunch, you can assign it to a hot corner, your middle mouse button, the default Shift+Tab keyboard shortcut, and a few other options. No matter how you choose to launch it, once you do, your desktop will fade away to make room for a Launchpad-like grid of applications. Just like Launchpad, you can organize your icons onto different pages, and drop them on top of each other to create folders. Unfortunately, the launcher doesn't auto-populate with all of your applications on first launch, so it'll take a little work to get up and running. Once you do though, it's every bit as fluid and responsive as Apple's version.

If you're reading this site, you probably know that this isn't the fastest way to launch apps on Windows (that prize belongs to Launchy). It is dead-simple to understand though, so even if it's not your cup of tea, this is a great app to remember when you're helping less tech-savvy friends set up a new computer.

Funding science today may lead to the next iPhone

Funding science today may lead to the next iPhone

Tax dollars dedicated to research and development were integral to many of the features in today's iPhones. (Image: Renato Mitra via Flickr user renatomitra)

The current economic climate in Washington is causing tighter scrutiny of government spending. Few would argue against analyzing where our tax dollars can be put to best use. But in conducting this analysis, we should keep in mind what history shows us: that investing in basic research can plant seeds for economic growth.

As many others have pointed out, some of the greatest scientific discoveries were the unexpected results of research driven by brilliant minds, not the expected results of research driven by funding priorities. This is not to say that scientific agencies shouldn?t have funding priorities, but that politicians and lay people need become more aware of the role that serendipity plays in the scientific process (and perhaps we as scientists need to do a better job of communicating this).

Sometimes seemingly esoteric projects?even those with large upfront costs?can have a tremendous economic impact down the road. Take the Human Genome Project, which cost taxpayers $2.7 billion dollars. It has returned an estimated $1 trillion dollars to the U.S. economy (and you can see how genomics research is helping public health in your state here). The Internet, Google, and the iPhone in your pocket all had their starts with help from government funds. In fact, ?of the roughly 100 most important innovations from 1971 to 2006, as identified by R&D Magazine, almost 90 percent depended heavily on federal research support.??

As we consider spending federal dollars on brain-mapping initiatives and an eventual manned mission to Mars, we should keep all this in mind. After all, who knows what fascinating ? and useful ? discoveries scientists are making at this very moment?

Brazilian president signs law permitting abortion after papal visit

Pope Francis walks with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at Rio?s Gale?o-Antonio Carlos Jobim Airport on July 22, 2013. Credit: Walter Sanchez Silva/CNA.

.- Four days after Pope Francis left Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff signed into a law a measure that opens the door to the distribution of abortion-causing drugs in the country?s public health care system.

Upon its publication in the government?s official journal, the August 1 law requires health care centers in Brazil to administer the ?morning-after pill? to women who say they have been raped up to 72 hours after the crime.

The head of Brazil?s Special Secretariat for Women?s Policies, Eleonora Menicucci, an avid abortion proponent, defended Rousseff saying the decision to sign the law was out of ?respect for Congress and for women.?

The new norm, she said, will have ?a positive impact in preventing abortion in women who have been the victims of rape,? although she acknowledged that it allows for abortifacient ?emergency contraception.??

The law will also ?mitigate the harm caused to the victims of sexual violence,? Menicucci said.

Gilberto Carvalho, an advisor to President Rousseff, said the new law offers women ?humanitarian support.?

At the end of July, more than 20 pro-life organizations in Latin America issued a statement calling on the Brazilian people ?not to be deceived and to do everything possible? to prevent the new law from being adopted.

?We have studied the measure and we can see in it the same strategy that is being used in all of our countries to promote widespread use of an abortifacient drug without a prescription,? the organizations warned.?

?Pro-abortion organizations have worked hard in recent years and are currently promoting abortion clandestinely with this drug through online or cell phone consultations,? said Carlos Polo, director of the Office for Latin America of the Population Research Institute.

Speaking on July 26, before the passage of the law, Polo charged that ?the same hand that will shake the hand of Pope Francis should not sign a law that would end the lives of many unborn children.?

During a World Youth Day catechesis session on July 26, Bishop Celso Antonio Marchiori of Apucarana in Brazil warned the pilgrims gathered there to be on alert for the imminent legalization of abortion in the country.

Bishop Juan Antonio Reig Pla of Alacala de Henares in Spain, who was also present at the catechesis, agreed.

?We need to be on alert against this threat that is part of the culture of death,? he said.

probl?me mise au point photo galaxy s4

Bonjour,
Je suis nouveau sur le forum, et relativement nouveau avec Android...
J'ai achet? le galaxy s4 il y a 10 jours.
Et j'ai rapidement eu un souci avec l'appareil photo...
A part quelques rares fois o?

Canadian Oil Exports

I've had my fair share of experiences with the peculiarities surrounding Canadian oil production.

One of the most interesting took place a few years back...

It happened at the crack of dawn, less than an hour after I pulled into Fort McMurray.

Lady Luck was on my side as I convinced the clerk at the front desk of one of the few hotels in town to let me check in before 6 a.m.

I soon found myself in a standard hotel room, but with one slight exception: The place was full of plaques emblazoned in Chinese lettering ? surely a sign of things to come, with Sinopec's $4.65 billion oil sands deal coming less than a year after my visit.

That was my first run-in with the burgeoning Sino-Canadian relationship.

It wouldn't be my last.

You see, there's a new phrase being taught to Alberta's top oil execs: F?ich?ng g?nxi? n? w?i yu?ny?u.

Roughly translated, that's Chinese for "Thanks for the oil."

Our Home and Native Oil Dealer

If there's one country we take for granted, it's Canada.

This is especially true when it comes to crude.

Forget the Middle East, forget OPEC, and don't even think about Mexico...

Our neighbor to the north far and away feeds our oil addiction. This much is proven each month by the Energy Information Administration's import data.

Last May, we graciously accepted an average of 2.8 million barrels per day from Canada ? twice as much as we imported from Saudi Arabia, our second highest source for oil. In fact, it takes four of OPEC's largest producers to match our Canadian imports!

Uncle Sam, on the other hand, hasn't exactly returned this oil gift in kind. The multi-year feet-dragging delay for government approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline is a perfect example.

What the U.S. government doesn't realize is that the Canadian oil industry won't wait around for the green light...

Things are about to change for the country's oil exports. And soon.

Mandarin Madness

It should be obvious to anyone outside of the D.C. Beltway that if we don't want more Canadian oil?? or if we continue to spurn it?? Asia will gladly take it.

The Chinese are waiting with open arms...

In the latest Short-Term Energy Outlook by the EIA, a nugget of information was glossed over by most people who took the time to read it: For the first time ever, non-OECD (think: China, India, Russia) oil consumption will surpass that of OECD countries by next year.

It's a trend we had better get used to, as non-OECD oil demand is expected to top 45.9 million per day in 2014.

Now, I'm not suggesting that Canada will suddenly stop sending us oil. But I have a feeling they've already found a better customer.

Buried Lines Feed the Far East's Oil Addiction

Earlier this week, a small press release from Canada's National Energy Board (NEB) was buried in the political drivel you and I are inundated with on a daily basis.

(Don't feel too bad if you missed it. I can count on one hand my friends who know Canada even has a National Energy Board.)

The NEB announced the environmental impact of production from the massive Canadian oil sands deposits won't play a role in the review of a new pipeline project by Kinder Morgan.

It's called the Trans Mountain pipeline system, and Kinder Morgan wants to nearly triple its capacity to almost 900,000 barrels per day.

Rather than transporting crude south, the Trans Mountain Pipeline ships it west from Alberta to British Columbia.

Think about this for a moment...

If the oil sands production weren't taken into account in TransCanada's project, approval would've been given back in 2008.

So while TransCanada's wait to ship more Canadian oil to U.S. refineries goes on endlessly, Kinder Morgan will help Canada tap into the crude-hungry Asian market.

And every barrel they send to the Far East is one less available for us.

For individual investors, the difference between the two stocks' performance has been considerable over the past year:

kmi vs trp

The major difference between TransCanada and Kinder Morgan's projects is that only one will get approval.

Unfortunately, it won't be the U.S. who will benefit from all this...

But there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't be beating the returns on both of these pipeline stocks.

My readers have been doing just that, day in and day out, for years now...

Because even with global oil demand shifting to favor those developing non-OECD countries, the most lucrative investments remain at home in the States.

This is how just one of our Bakken picks stacks up against the aforementioned pipeline companies:

pipelines vs bakken

Learn more about the three U.S. oil stocks we're buying now.

The good news is you won't have to brush up on your Mandarin...

Until next time,

Associate: Hernandez put guns in box in basement

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? New court records say that an associate of Aaron Hernandez told police the former New England Patriot put guns in a box in his basement after returning from the industrial park where his friend was fatally shot.

An affidavit released by Attleboro District Court says Carlos Ortiz told investigators Hernandez put firearms in the black box after Odin Lloyd's killing. The document indicates one was a small gun Ortiz handed Hernandez after they returned home with another associate, Ernest Wallace. Ortiz said he earlier saw Hernandez with an additional "large handgun."

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of Lloyd, a 27-year-old Boston semi-professional football player whose body was found June 17 about a mile from Hernandez's North Attleborough, Mass., home. His attorneys have said the case against him is circumstantial and they are confident he will be exonerated.

Authorities believe Lloyd was killed with a .45-caliber Glock, which hasn't been recovered. Prosecutors say video surveillance from Hernandez's home before and after the killing shows him holding a gun that appears to be a Glock.

Police divers have been searching this week in a lake in Bristol, Conn., Hernandez's hometown. Authorities have declined to comment on the search, but have confirmed it is linked to the investigation.

Prosecutors have not said who fired the fatal shots. But court records released in Florida say Ortiz told investigators Wallace said it was Hernandez.

The new documents released in Massachusetts indicate authorities seized a cellphone and credit and bank cards from a relative of Hernandez, identified as Tanya Singleton-Valderamma, of Bristol. Ortiz told investigators he and Wallace drove to Bristol after Lloyd's killing and that he was dropped off at Singleton-Valderamma's house, according to the affidavit. Ortiz said he discussed Lloyd's killing with her.

The records say that Singleton-Valderamma later purchased with a credit card, under a previous name, a Greyhound ticket from Macon, Ga., to Miami, Fla., and that Wallace traveled on a bus between those two points. He later turned himself in in Miramar, Fla., where his parents live, and is being held in Massachusetts on a charge of accessory to murder after the fact.

The affidavit says it is not known how Wallace traveled from Connecticut to Georgia.

Ortiz is facing a gun charge in connection with the case. Both Ortiz and Wallace have pleaded not guilty.

Hernandez is being held without bail and is next due in court on Aug. 22 for a probable cause hearing.

Younger generation of doctors has more debt, shorter hours and better work/life balance

Dr. Lawrence Robinson is vice dean for clinical affairs and graduate medical education at the UW School of Medicine, in Seattle.

It?s not just another speech about walking uphill to school ? both ways ? in the snow: New doctors do have it different from their older colleagues.

And they want different things, too.

Physicians just graduating from medical school or embarking on their residencies will have shorter hours, bigger debt and more work/life balance than doctors who finished school in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

?The only limit (in those days) was you could only work 168 hours per week, because that was all the hours there are in a week,? said Dr. Lawrence Robinson, vice dean for clinical affairs and graduate medical education at the UW School of Medicine. ?There was no limit ? in some cases people would work over 100 hours a week.?

New doctors have the stress of major loans, but they have more leverage for things like time off and regular hours because there is a smaller supply of doctors relative to demand, he said.

?The average medical student in the United States graduates with $150,000 worth of debt,? Robinson said. ?So they are worried about paying this all back by the end of their residency and when they go into practice.?

Medical schools and residencies aren?t producing enough physicians to meet the need, and with health insurance reform, more people will have access to care, further increasing the demand.

?The need for physicians is going up significantly in this country and in our region,? he said. ?The gap between how many physicians we think we?ll need and the number we think will really be available is widening over time.?

The changes started in the early 2000s, when new regulations placed a limit of 80 hours a week on residents' work schedules.

Real Housewives of OC Star Gretchen Rossi Dishes Dream Wedding Details

After an epic proposal to her boyfriend ? and now?fianc? ? Slade Smiley, Gretchen Rossi?is already dishing about what her dream wedding would look like.

We already know Gretchen doesn't do anything by the book, since she popped the question to Slade four months ago atop the AT&T building in Los Angeles, so we're expecting this Real Housewives of Orange Countyi?star to go all out for her big day.

Now, after planning the perfect proposal, it's time for Gretchen to look ahead and start planning out an extravagant affair ? and it sounds like it might just be an international celebration. "We're talking about visiting a bunch of Italian cities in the fall to pick a location," Gretchen told Life & Style.?

With the dream locale ? or at least the country ? chosen, Gretchen is already picturing how she wants to walk down the aisle. "I have this vision of being in the middle of a beautiful winery with the sun setting and me walking through floral arches."

Wow, that sounds amazing to us! Will we be able to see it on TV?

"I feel like I?ve shared the last four years of my life with the audience and with Slade," Gretchen explains. "I feel like it would almost be kind of unfair not to allow the audience into this part of my life as well. People want to see the fairytale ending, so I feel like I am obligated to share this special moment in my life on camera."

Investors look to ECB for guidance as economy perks up

By Paul Carrel

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Signs of a tentative euro zone recovery are easing pressure on the European Central Bank to take fresh policy action and on Thursday it will emphasise its message that interest rates are on hold for an extended period.

Stronger economic reports in the past few days support the ECB's expectations of a recovery later this year, though the policy options are complicated by market responses to the U.S. Federal Reserve's plans to slow its economic stimulus programme.

The ECB responded last month to the market turmoil roused by the Fed's exit plan by breaking with precedent and declaring it would keep interest rates at record lows for an extended period and that it may yet cut further.

Individual policymakers' interpretation of the ECB's forward guidance over last month has blurred the message, however, with Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann insisting the ECB had not "tied itself to the mast".

The result is that the ploy has proven only partially successful in calming markets and offsetting the Fed fallout.

"In some respects there is some additional complexity this month," said Nomura economist Nick Matthews, who expected the ECB to leave its main rate on hold at a record low of 0.5 percent, though he saw a risk of a cut.

"You've got the improvement in the survey data but at the same time you've got a month's worth of forward guidance impact to look at and the bottom line is it has not made a huge impact on the level of market rates," he added.

The Fed offered no hint after its latest policy meeting ended on Wednesday that it plans to trim its stimulus programme soon, saying the U.S. economy is recovering but still needs support.

In the euro zone, unemployment fell for the first time in more than two years in June, business and economic sentiment rose to a 15-month high in July, and surveys suggested unexpected growth in private sector business.

A Reuters poll showed 69 of 70 economists expect the central bank to refrain from rate cuts.

But lending to firms is still declining in the euro zone and is especially weak across the bloc's troubled debtor countries, which could keep calls for lower policy rates alive.

ECB President Mario Draghi said the 23-man Governing Council discussed a rate cut last month, before deciding to hold.

"I think they're going to have a discussion about cutting rates again, there will be some on the Governing Council who will have arguments for that - to push a recovery, to really get things going," said Berenberg Bank's Christian Schulz.

"But net , everything that happened between last month's meeting and this month was positive and in some cases may have even surprised the ECB on the upside, so I don't really see them cutting rates," he added.

GUIDANCE ON GUIDANCE

Fresh ECB staff forecasts in September may give ECB policymakers grounds to cut rates or - if the growth projections are revised up - make their language less dovish.

But the focus at Thursday's post-rate decision news conference will be on discussion at the ECB about publishing the minutes of Council meetings, and the forward guidance message.

Draghi told a German newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday he wants to begin publishing the minutes of ECB Council meetings, which until now have been kept secret.

However, such a move to increase transparency at the central bank is sure to meet resistance from some ECB policymakers, who fear the move could open them up to political pressure from national governments and will take time to agree.

Explaining the ECB's expectation that it would keep rates at record lows for an "extended period", Draghi gave little away last month when pressed on the timeframe, saying it was "not six months, it's not 12 months. It's an extended period of time."

He cited a subdued inflation outlook, economic weakness and subdued monetary dynamics as underpinning this expectation.

But the ECB's steer is more flimsy than the guidance offered by the Federal Reserve, which, aside from calling time on its quantitative easing plan, has promised to keep its main interest rate near zero at least until the unemployment rate falls to 6.5 percent and as long as inflation stays below 2.5 percent.

Analysts did not expect Draghi to come out with any specific time horizon or thresholds for the ECB's guidance on Thursday, making the tone of his comments all the more important.

"He will try to verbally reinforce the guidance and the downside bias on rates, and probably threaten action if there is no improvement, which could put the focus on the next couple of meetings for any additional policy measures," said Matthews at Nomura.

Dr. Craig White

Dr. Craig White

peopleDr. Craig White of Davidson Family Medicine has reeled in a couple of local and national honors this summer in polls of his fellow docs. In July he landed on Charlotte Magazine?s Top Doctors List. And he?s also in the 2013 Best Doctors in America.

Dr. White is a north Mecklenburg native and Davidson College graduate, who has been a family physician in the Lake Norman area for more than two decades. Initially, he worked in big medicine, in practices that were part of the region?s two big hospital groups.

But a dozen years ago, he decided to go independent. ?I decided I wanted to do things differently. I saw where the hospital model was headed,? he said in a March 2013 interview on DavidsonNews.net. While working in a large hospital-affiliated group, he said, ?It just appeared in later years to be very volume-driven, productivity oriented.?

Charlotte Magazine?s list was the result of an online survey sent to 3,000 physicians in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union and Gaston counties. Dr. White was picked for the third time this year, in the Family Medicine category.

Six doctors from Huntersville also made Charlotte Magazine?s list this year: B. Vittal Shenoy (pathology), Barbara E. Meyer (family medicine), Kemery Gilbert (pathology), Peter Capizzi (plastic surgery), Thomas Batchelor (internal medicine) and Thomas Jenike (family practice).

Doctors were asked whom they would call if the they or a loved one were sick. The magazine said its survey is not tied to advertising and the results were secret until publication. Doctors were not allowed to vote for themselves.

BEST IN AMERICA, TOO

Meanwhile, a nationwide survey of 45,000 physicians across the U.S. produced the 2013 Best Doctors in America List. Dr. White was named to the list for the fourth time.

Best Doctors in America is assembled by Best Doctors Inc., which asks physicians: ?If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer??

Doctors don?t pay to be included in the Best Doctors database, nor are they paid to provide their input, Best Doctors said. The survey organizers said the list represents those doctors recognized by their peers as the top 3-5 percent of their respective specialties.

?It?s incredibly rewarding to know so many of my respected peers recognize me as an expert in the field of family medicine,? according to Dr. White, who is the only family physician named to the Best Doctors list from northern Mecklenburg/south Iredell County.
