Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presents 2012 Honda Cup to Baylor University?s Brittney Griner

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Brittney Griner, who electrified basketball audiences with her two-handed dunks and formidable shot blocking, is the 2012 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and recipient of the Honda Cup. Griner was presented the prestigious award Sunday in a live telecast from the ESPN Studios in downtown Los Angeles.

The Baylor University junior was selected by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 36^th year, from a trio of finalists that included soccer midfielder Teresa Noyola of Stanford University and softball pitcher Keilani Ricketts of the University of Oklahoma. Griner received the Honda Cup at the live ceremony that also featured Honda Inspiration Award recipient Elena Delle Donne of the University of Delaware, top Division II athlete Kari Daugherty of Ashland University and Division III athlete Stacey Hagensen of Pacific Lutheran University.

?I?m honored to even be here, even to be in the room with these athletes,? said Griner. ?I?m at a loss for words. When I look at myself, it is definitely humbling. My mom and my dad they?ve been there through everything for me. My mom hasn?t made a lot of my games due to illness, but she?s always calling me before and after my games. My dad comes to every game; he drives three hours even though he has to be at work at seven in the morning. He took me everywhere to play when I was younger, he would always take time off and come to my games. This is an honor for my entire family, it?s amazing.?

Griner, who counts 2008 Honda Cup winner Candace Parker as her favorite player, led Baylor to a perfect season and the Division I women?s basketball championship. She averaged 23.2 points per game, a Big 12 scoring record, 9.5 rebounds, and 5.2 shot blocks, the highest in the nation. So far in her career at Baylor, the 6-foot-8 center has scored 2,425 points and 599 shot blocks and is the first collegiate player to reach 2,000 points and 500 blocks. She received the John R. Wooden Award and was named the 2012 AP Player of the Year. She has said she will forgo entering the WNBA to return to Baylor. As a player at Nimitz High School in Houston, Texas, she drew national attention for her dunking ability.

Is arm length the reason women need reading glasses sooner than men?

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? Studies have consistently reported that women require reading glasses or bifocal lenses earlier than men. According to a recent Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science paper, the gender difference is caused by factors other than focusing ability, such as arm length or preferred reading distance, which should be considered when prescribing readers or bifocals.

The new evidence was found by a team of researchers who performed a meta-analysis using nine cross-sectional studies to compare the prevalence and magnitude of presbyopia -- commonly described as the loss of near vision that occurs with age -- among men and women. The researchers further subdivided the analysis to determine what differences in presbyopia might exist between men and women.

While the results of a subgroup of studies showed that there was no significant gender-related difference in the eye's ability to focus clearly on objects at near distances, the overall analysis provided evidence that women have a need for higher power reading glasses or bifocals than men of an equivalent age. According to the researchers, this discrepancy is likely due to differences in preferred reading distances or arm length as women tend to hold reading materials closer than men do.

"These findings could impact global vision care in multiple ways," said Hickenbotham. "The findings reinforce the need for presbyopia correction programs for women -- a group that often has greater unmet vision needs in developing countries. It also points out that presbyopia is a multi-factorial problem and requires solutions that are tailored to each individual."

While the researchers urge clinicians to do more than measure the eye's ability to focus when diagnosing presbyopia, they also suggest more carefully performed studies be conducted that better isolate and measure the various factors that contribute to its development. In particular, the paper states longitudinal studies that consider the interaction between the preferred reading distance and the change in accommodative amplitude across time for males and females could help determine to what extent biological factors or environmental factors plays a role in the loss of focusing ability with increasing age.

Deadly Israel Raid on Gaza Deals Blow to Truce Efforts

An Israeli air strike on Gaza killed one Palestinian and wounded two on Saturday, medics said, in a blow to Egyptian-brokered efforts to restore an informal truce.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military of the latest raid which followed several on the territory during the night that drew retaliatory rocket fire into Israel.

The casualties came in a strike east of the city of Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources said.

Overnight raids targeted two camps of the armed wing of Gaza's Hamas rulers in the center and north of the territory, and a former Hamas security post in Gaza City. They wounded about 20 people, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Palestinian struck back, firing at least 23 rockets into southern Israel, most of them hitting the town of Sderot close to the Gaza border, Israeli officials told AFP, adding that one man was wounded.

An Israeli army statement said the latest raids were in response to rocket fire earlier in the week.

Israel held Hamas responsible for "all terrorist activity coming from the Gaza Strip," the army statement added.

On Friday, medics in the Gaza Strip reported that two Palestinians had been killed and four wounded when Israeli warplanes struck twice.

A first Israeli air strike on Friday afternoon targeted the east of Al-Bureij in the central part of the Gaza Strip, killing Basel Ahmad, 29, who was of no known affiliation, medical sources said.

Two other Palestinians were wounded in the strike, one of them seriously, the sources added.

Israeli aircraft "targeted a terrorist squad during preparations to fire a rocket at Israel from the central Gaza Strip. A hit was identified," the military said in a statement.

A second Israel air strike killed another Palestinian in the north of Gaza.

Hammam Abou Qadous, 20, died of his wounds after being hit as he travelled on his motorbike in northern Gaza on Friday evening, medical sources said.

Two other Palestinians were slightly injured, they added.

An army statement said "a plane of the Israel Air Force targeted a terrorist group in northern Gaza just after the group launched a rocket that hit the Ashkelon region".

An army spokeswoman said that five of the 23 rockets fired into Israel on Saturday were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

"Eighteen rockets exploded this morning in southern Israel, 16 of them in the town of Sderot," the spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said one Israeli was wounded when a rocket hit a building in Sderot.

The violence came despite a tenuous Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas. It was announced late on Wednesday by the Islamists' Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades military wing after a flurry of deadly exchanges in and around the territory.

The latest round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air strikes Monday morning, just hours after gunmen from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Israel has said that its sudden spike in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting militants about to attack the Jewish state.

Calif. rice farmers helping migratory birds

WILLIAMS, Calif. (AP) ? The rust-orange head of an American avocet darted back and forth watching for predators, its black-and-white feathered body plopped atop a nest of four speckled eggs that lay on an earthen levee in a California rice paddy.

"It's a full clutch of four eggs," said Monica Iglecia, a shorebird biologist with Audubon California, looking through binoculars. "This is why we do this work. It's exciting to see."

The hundreds of vast, flooded rice paddies that cover miles of interior northern California may seem like an unlikely safe haven for shorebirds, but changes occurring in the state's rice country may help improve the outlook for dozens of species in decline in recent decades. So far, more than 165 rice farmers have signed up for an incentive program that will build a system of islands and other habitat improvements in their paddies, and provide birds like the avocet a place to rest, feed and breed throughout the year.

The incentive, funded by $2 million from the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service, helps defray the costs of building the islands or of new equipment needed to make levees and other farm infrastructure more amenable as habitat.

California's rice farms lie in a region where about 95 percent of the native wetlands that once provided habitat for migratory and water birds have disappeared. The state's rice paddies, which produce much of the sushi rice consumed in the U.S., take up more than a half million acres in the Sacramento Valley while protected wetlands cover a little more than 77,000 acres.

Even with shrinking wetlands, this valley that stretches from the state capital north about 160 miles to Redding is a part-time home to cinnamon-teal ducks, dowitchers, dunlins, black-necked stilts and dozens of other migratory water birds.

Migratory birds face a number of perils, not least among them the effects of climate change, which is expected to reduce the Sierra Nevada snowpack and the amount of water feeding the remaining wetlands, said Khara Strum, a water bird ecologist with PRBO Conservation Science.

As natural bird habitat dwindles, California's Sacramento Valley falls under a flight pattern known as the Pacific Flyway, a major route for migratory birds that stretches from Alaska to Patagonia. So biologists see a significant opportunity in adding to and improving habitat on the only other wetlands that proliferate here: rice farms.

Jim LaGrande, a farmer whose family has grown rice in the region for generations, has flattened the tops of the 2,200-foot-long dirt levees that regulate the flow of Sacramento River water he uses to flood his paddies. The hip-high levees for generations had been built in an "A-frame" like mound that made nesting difficult.

On a sweltering afternoon at LaGrande's farm, black-necked stilts darted around his paddies looking tuxedo clad. Brown-and-white killdeer skittered about with small least sandpipers, all birds that had come to the area to breed.

"I feel I am privileged to be able to come out every day and witness a wonderful environment with wildlife," LaGrande said, standing in blue jeans and a denim shirt overlooking a bright green field of short-grain sushi rice. "To be the person who is actually able to provide enhancements to aid this process gives me a feeling of accomplishment in doing my part in nature's way."

Beyond building islands and other new habitat, the farmers are changing the way they manage the water they use to flood the paddies. In late winter, many farmers drain the fields to begin the grow cycle anew, resulting in the sudden disappearance each year of thousands of acres of wetland habitat for the birds.

LaGrande and the other farmers have agreed to begin gradually draining their fields, leaving some partially flooded for birds that like to feed and rest in shallow, muddy areas.

"We are doing a variable draw down now, keeping water in the fields longer for different species that like different water heights," he said.

To get the incentive funds, the farmers apply to the conservation service, which sends a representative out for a field visit to discuss the project and rank the application. Generally, the incentive program covers about half the costs the farmer will incur.

As with many such undertakings, it remains to be seen whether the plan will work, and Iglecia of Audubon said it is still too early to tell if the birds will take a liking to the islands. But there are promising signs, she said, like the avocet and other bird nests that have been cropping up on the rice paddy levees.

It will take at least two years of gathering data for scientists ascertain whether they are on to something, but they are grateful to the farmers for allowing the experiment, which covers a fraction of the state's rice paddies, to occur at all.

"If you want to do conservation here, you've got to be able to work with private landowners," Strum said. "It's been a win-win for conservationists and the farmers, with ecological and economic benefits."
