Zen Bound 2 [Android Game Review]

We could probably all use a little more Zen in our lives. With the stress of work, bills, family, etc., it can be hard to take a moment, relax, and just be calm. Like Osmos HD and Gravilux before it, Zen Bound 2 looks to continue the proud tradition of Android games that both bake your noodle and calm your nerves.

The premise of Zen Bound 2 is simple: wrap a rope around a wooden figurine. Everywhere the rope touches, the wood is painted. Your goal is to paint as much of the wood as you can while using the least amount of string. When you're all done painting, you then? have to maneuver the rope around a nail sticking out of the figurine and tie a knot. Once the knot is tied, the level is over.

For each level you play, there's minimum conditions for winning, based on what percent of the figurine you paint. Paint more of the figurine, you get more flowers. Paint less, receive less. (Flowers are the reward/currency for unlocking more levels.)

This mechanic forces you to go a replay levels you tried to burn through, as you'll soon realize that the levels you want to be at are more expensive than the flowers you've got. It's actually pretty brilliant in that regard, because playing levels over again is great practice and keeps you coming back.

Zen Bound 2 also lives right up to its name. The background music is soft and ambient, with the occasional tinkle of wind chimes and other wooden instruments. It's all very subdued and under the surface, contributing to the calming vibe. Make sure you dim the lights and put your feet up before loading this game up.

Smooth phlox is a charming in-between bloomer

Smooth phlox blooms between the end of creeping woodland phlox of early spring and the start of summer's tall garden phlox.

Smooth phlox (Phlox glaberrima) is an easy-to-grow native perennial that flowers in late spring or early summer.

Gardeners are probably most familiar with Phlox paniculata, or tall garden phlox, which blooms in summer. If you are a woodland or shade gardener, then perhaps the creeping woodland phlox (P. stolonifera), or wild blue wood phlox (P. divaricata) is most familiar.

While tall garden phlox generally wants sun and blooms in summer, the two woodland species bloom in spring and want an edge-of-the-woods location.?

Mr. In-Between

There is a lapse in bloom times between the early woodland phlox and the summer phlox. Fortunately for gardeners, that niche is filled? with the smooth phlox (P. glaberrima). I call this species Mr. In-Between for its continual bloom during May and into June here in Southern Indiana.? It's native to many East Coast and Midwestern states.

While the smooth phlox is satisfying in the species, my favorite is a cultivar named Morris Berd.

Its individual flowers are quite large compared to the species. Each flower is a rosy-pink with a eye of white swirl, and petals are of heavy substance. The relatively large blooms are carried in clusters well above the foliage. Flowers are fragrant and attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies as well as gardeners. Leaves are long and narrow, clean green, providing a nice background for the blooms.

Morris Berd reaches only a foot or so in height and has a spread of couple of feet. While vigorous in growth, the rhizomatous habit is clump forming, and the plant is well-behaved. It is not demanding about soil -- it handles a wide range from moist to dry -- and does well from shade to full sun. Mine is in open shade.

It's easily grown, very tolerant of less-than-ideal conditions, and hardy from Zones 3 to 8. Throw in resistance to deer browsing, and what more could a gardener ask of a perennial?

In my garden

Along a path located on the west side of my garden where plants will get a touch of setting sun, I have a drift of smooth phlox that ends in dark-leaved bugbane (Actaea) among limestone rocks lining the path. [See third photo above; click on the arrow at the right base of the first and second photos to see the third one.]

On the opposite side, there is a second small drift at the base of a tree. Thus far my favorite companion is Campanula (bellflower). [See second photo above.] The blue blooms of the Campanula provide a punch to the phlox's pink, enhancing the overall experience for those who choose to walk that path over another.

55 years later, 'On the Road' is finally a movie

CANNES, France (AP) ? Fifty-five years after its publication, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" is finally burning on the big screen.

Everyone from Marlon Brando to Jean-Luc Godard to Brad Pitt has circled the classic 1957 novel over the last six decades, but Walter Salles' adaptation is the first to actually get made. The wait isn't for lack of desire: Kerouac passionately wanted to see his book made a film, even writing Brando a letter promising that he could turn the book's lyrical road trips into a "movie-type structure."

"On the Road" premiered Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, far away from the American roads crisscrossed by Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, the characters modeled on Kerouac and Neal Cassady, respectively.

"Unless you revive it by rereading it, re-imagining it, performing it, it's a dead thing," said Viggo Mortensen, who plays the William S. Burroughs character in the film. "You have to reread it to make it live again."

The pun is inevitable: It has been a long road for "On the Road." Though there was interest in a Hollywood adaptation as soon as it was published, nothing came of various negotiations and attempted screenplays. Francis Ford Coppola purchased the novel's rights in 1979, and he, too, failed to grasp an interpretation.

It's his son, the director Roman Coppola, who's producing "On the Road," which is being released in various international countries over the next few months, with a U.S. release prepared for late fall by IFC Films and Sundance Selects.

The Brazilian director Salles became involved after making another road movie: 2004's "The Motorcycle Diaries," which chronicled a South American trip by a young Che Guevara. The "On the Road" screenplay is also by the writer of "The Motorcycle Diaries," Jose Rivera.

Both films, Salles said in a press conference for the film Wednesday, are about "a social and political awakening."

"It's about the search of that last frontier that they will never find," Salles said. "It's about also discovering that this is the end of the road and the end of the American dream."

Much of the problem in adapting "On the Road" is its meandering narrative in which Paradise (played by Sam Riley) and Moriarty make a series of cross-country road trips in post-World War II America, where their intellectual, passionate bohemian ways (and copious amounts of cigarettes, booze and marijuana) sometimes clash with a more conservative society. There are many girls along the way, who are played by Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Elisabeth Moss and Alice Braga.

"On the Road" gets the group's passionate, carnal camaraderie, but it struggles more (as was perhaps inevitable) to capture the white hot pulse of Kerouac's book, which was famously written in three weeks on a long scroll (though that story underestimates Kerouac's earlier notebook writing).

Kerouac writes: "The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles."

"Those characters in the book had the courage to experience everything in the flesh," said Salles.

But to make the early days of the Beat Generation (Tom Sturridge plays the Allen Ginsberg character) alive again, Salles went to great lengths for realism. He spent five years making an unreleased documentary on the book and says the entire process of making the film covered nearly 100,000 kilometers (more than 62,000 miles).

Descendants of the book's real-life inspirations were also consulted and Salles held a four-week "boot camp" for the cast before starting shooting in Montreal to soak up Beat history. Stewart, who plays Moriarty's girlfriend Marylou, says she poured over audio tapes of Luanne Henderson, her character's inspiration, and met with Henderson's daughter.

"I genuinely felt like I could look up in a moment where I wasn't getting somewhere or a moment where I was feeling like I was reaching too hard or too desperately," said Stewart. "I felt her. And I would have never had that without her daughter or those tapes."

Whether "On the Road," the film, will seem as relevant to audiences now remains to be seen. Mortensen suggested the story bears particular contemporary resonance in a time of youthful protests over the economic collapse and in the Arab Spring.

Said Mortensen: "I think it was worth the wait."

Well-connected brains make you smarter in older age

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Brains that maintain healthy nerve connections as we age help keep us sharp in later life, new research funded by the charity Age UK has found.

Older people with robust brain 'wiring' -- that is, the nerve fibers that connect different, distant brain areas -- can process information quickly and that this makes them generally smarter, the study suggests.

According to the findings, joining distant parts of the brain together with better wiring improves mental performance, suggesting that intelligence is not found in a single part of the brain.

However a loss of condition of this wiring or 'white matter' -- the billions of nerve fibers that transmit signals around the brain -- can negatively affect our intelligence by altering these networks and slowing down our processing speed.

The research by the University of Edinburgh shows for the first time that the deterioration of white matter with age is likely to be a significant cause of age-related cognitive decline.

The research team used three different brain imaging techniques in compiling the results, including two that have never been used before in the study of intelligence.

These techniques measure the amount of water in brain tissue, indicate structural loss in the brain, and show how well the nerve fibers are insulated.

The researchers examined scans and results of thinking and reaction time tests from 420 people in the Lothian Birth Cohort of 1936, a group of nearly 1100 people whose intelligence & general health have been tracked since they were 11

The research was part of the Disconnected Mind Project, a large study of the causes of people's differences in cognitive aging, led by Professor Ian Deary.

Study author Doctor Lars Penke said "Our results suggest a first plausible way how brain structure differences lead to higher intelligence. The results are exciting for our understanding of human intelligence differences at all ages."

"They also suggest a clear target for seeking treatment for mental difficulties, be they pathological or age-related. That the brain's nerve connections tend to stay the same throughout the brain means we can now look at factors that affect the overall condition of the brain, like its bloody supply."

Professor Deary said that uncovering the secrets of good thinking skills in old age is a high priority. "The research team is now looking at what keeps the brain's connections healthy. We value our thinking skills, and research should address how we might retain them or slow their decline with age."

Doctor Mark Bastin, who co-authored the study, said "These findings are exciting as they show how quantitative brain imaging can provide novel insights into the links between brain structure and cognitive ability. This is a key research area given the importance of identifying strategies for retaining good mental ability into older age."

Professor James Goodwin, Head of Research at Age UK, said: "This research is very exciting as it could have a real impact on tackling mental decline in later life, including dementia. With new understanding on how the brain functions we can work out why mental faculties decline with age in some people and not others and look at what can be done to improve our minds' chances of aging better."
