Microsoft shares hit hard after profit badly misses expectations

Microsoft Corp. fell the most in more than four years after fourth-quarter profit missed analysts' projections by the biggest margin in at least a decade as demand weakens for Windows-run personal computers.

Results also were hurt by a $900 million writedown of Surface tablet inventory, shaving 7 cents a share from earnings. Excluding that, profit was 66 cents a share, Microsoft said Thursday, trailing analysts' 75-cent prediction.

Stung by a Surface device that few consumers want, the company faces a shift by consumers to mobile gadgets that offer many of the same features as laptops and desktops at lower prices.

CEO Steve Ballmer's effort to focus the company on devices and services may reduce profit as both areas carry thinner margins than traditional software.

"PCs were just uglier than people thought they would be, and people also had more Surface sales in there than there were," said Mark Moerdler, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York, who rates Microsoft shares outperform.

Microsoft fell 11 percent to $31.40 at Friday's close in New York, the most since January 2009. The stock has gained 18 percent this year, compared with a 19 percent increase in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

PC shipments fell 11 percent last quarter, Framingham, Mass.-based IDC said. Surface, Microsoft's first-ever computer, shipped just 900,000 units in the last two quarters, IDC said.

David and Claire just married ? oh and David?s talking, Claire?s got her wish?

Forget about Guardian Soulmates and Match, meet your life partner at 26 ? David Bodanis and Claire Falcon did. And, then reader, they got married. And 26?s Andy Hayes was the mystery guest.

Yes, become a 26-er and true love could be yours. Latest to tie the knot are writer David Bodanis of Wordstock fame, and Claire Falcon, Dark Angel and faithful devotee of our alphabetical institution. ?I did say when I heard him speak at Wordstock in October that I could have listened to him all afternoon, but I didn?t realise I?d end up listening to him for the rest of my life!? said the blushing (and slightly bemused) bride. The surprise ceremony at Islington Town Hall on Friday 5 July (sprung on the bride just a few days earlier ? although she?d had her outfit, including sparkly gold shoes, ready for weeks, in anticipation of the moment), included mystery guest, 26-er and Marathon Man Andy Hayes ? now to be known as ?the Fixer? ? whose invitation to Throwaway Lines in November was the catalyst for this budding romance. ?At Andy?s exhibition, I was standing by the door chatting to Ezri as Claire was leaving ? so I should also thank him for not being prettier and longer-haired or I might have missed my moment!? David commented.

Claire and David would like to thank Andy not only for inviting them both but also for being such a nice chap that they decided to go despite both having other things they had to go to as well that night; to thank Ezri ? well, for not being a girl!; and to thank 26 for existing. Oh yes, and not forgetting Elise Valmorbida who invited David to speak at Wordstock in the first place? ah, and then John Simmons who invited Claire to be a 26-er and Dark Angel all those years ago? but I think that?s enough thanks now, thank you Claire and David. Oh yes, alright then, we can thank God too but really, that?s quite enough now.

Cooks recount horror of Indian school lunch deaths

PATNA, India (AP) ? Soon after they served the daily free lunch they had prepared for dozens of children at a rural Indian school, the two cooks realized something was very wrong. The students started fainting. Within hours, they began dying.

By Thursday afternoon, 23 children between the ages of 5 and 12 had died from eating food laced with insecticide and many others had fallen ill.

Authorities discovered a container of pesticide in the school's cooking area next to the vegetable cooking oil and mustard oil, according to Amarjeet Sinha, a top official in the state of Bihar, where the tragedy took place.

"It's not a case of food poisoning. It's a case of poison in food in a large quantity, going by the instant deaths," he said.

Earlier, some officials had said it appeared that the rice had somehow been tainted with pesticide and might not have been properly washed before it was cooked.

More answers were expected Friday, when a forensic laboratory was to issue the results of its tests on the dead children, the food and the uncooked grain stored by the principal in her house, he said. Police were searching for the principal, who fled after the students started falling sick, Sinha said.

The cooks, Manju Devi and Pano Devi, told The Associated Press that the principal controlled the food for the free daily lunch provided by the government at the school. On Tuesday morning, she gave them rice, potatoes, soy and other ingredients needed to prepare the meal and then went about her business. As the children ate, they started fainting, the cooks said.

The two cooks were not spared either.

Manju Devi, 30, ate some of the food and fainted. Her three children, ages 5, 8 and 13, fell ill as well. All were in stable condition Thursday.

While Pano Devi, 35, didn't eat the tainted food, her three children did. Two of them died and the third, a 4-year-old daughter, was in the hospital.

"I will stop cooking at the school," she said. "I am so horrified that I wouldn't grieve more if my only surviving child died."

Sinha said one of the cooks told authorities that the cooking oil appeared different than usual, but the principal told her to use it anyway. Doctors believed the food contained an organophosphate used as an insecticide, he said.

The free midday meal was served to the children Tuesday in Gandamal village in Masrakh block, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Patna, the Bihar state capital.

Those who survived the poison were unlikely to suffer from any serious aftereffects from the tainted food, said Patna Medical College hospital superintendent Amarkant Jha Amar.

"There will be no remnant effects on them. The effects of poisoning will be washed after a certain period of time from the tissues," Amar said.

Amar said Thursday that the post-mortem reports on the children who died confirmed that insecticide was either in the food or cooking oil. He said authorities were waiting for lab results for more details on the chemicals.

India's midday meal scheme is one of the world's biggest school nutrition programs. State governments have the freedom to decide on menus and timings of the meals, depending on local conditions and availability of food rations. It was first introduced in the 1960s in southern India, where it was seen as an incentive for poor parents to send their children to school.

Since then, the program has been replicated across the country, covering some 120 million schoolchildren. It's part of an effort to address concerns about malnutrition, which the government says nearly half of all Indian children suffer from.

Although there have been complaints about the quality of the food served and the lack of hygiene, the incident in Bihar appeared to be unprecedented for the massive food program.

International court: Libya must hand over Seif

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? The International Criminal Court told Libya Thursday it has to hand over the son and one-time heir-apparent of ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi so he can face charges of crimes against humanity.

Rejecting Libya's request to suspend an earlier order to Tripoli to hand over Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, judges at the Hague-based court said Libya is "currently obliged to surrender Mr. Gadhafi to the court."

An international legal tug-of-war has been going on for months between the international court and Libya over where Seif al-Islam should face justice. Libyan authorities have said they will try him next month.

Libya appealed the court decision that Gadhafi's son should be tried in The Hague and asked for an order to surrender him to be suspended pending the outcome of that appeal. The court rejected that request for suspension on Thursday.

Libya has argued that Seif al-Islam should be tried at home, but judges and the suspect's lawyers have cast doubt on the country's ability to give him a fair trial. Defense lawyer John Jones said last month that Seif al-Islam could be executed in Libya before the appeal is completed if he is not handed over to the court.

"The possible implementation of the death penalty in domestic proceedings would also create a grievous and irremediable consequence for Mr. Gadhafi, and completely undermine the ability of the Appeals Chamber to render a determination on the appeal," Jones wrote to the court.

Libyan prosecutors said in June that Seif al-Islam, Gadhafi-era spy chief Abdullah al-Senoussi ? who also is wanted by the ICC ? and ex-premier al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, along with ex-spokesman Milad Daman, will be tried in August for crimes committed during Gadhafi's 42-year rule and the eight-month civil war that deposed him.

In The Hague, Seif al-Islam is charged with murder and persecution of civilians during the early days of the popular 2011 rebellion that eventually toppled his father. If convicted he would face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment at the Hague court, which does not have the death penalty.

Gadhafi was also charged, but the case was dropped after he was captured and killed by rebels.
