Everybody Loves Iowa (The Atlantic Wire)

As the Republican primary heats up, that can only mean more ads. Which ones succeed? Which fail? We'll be reviewing them as they come out. Today, Mitt Romney sucks up to Iowa, Michele Bachmann dubs herself the Iron Lady, and normal people love Ron Paul.

Related: GOP Debate to Lead the Free World

Related: Don't Forget There Are Seven Other Presidential Candidates

The Ad: Mitt Romney, "Restore America's Greatness"

Related: GOP Debate Preview: Hey, We're Not So Bad

The Issues: America (particularly Iowa), its greatness (especially Iowa's), and the restoring of said greatness (again with the Iowa's).

Related: GOP Debate: Newt Can't Hide It When He Thinks You're Stupid

The Message: Hey Iowa! Mitt Romney's driving through your town with his sleeves up, humbly asking for your help so he can fix America one?hilarious Kim Kardashian joke?at a time. No, but seriously folks, Obama's socialism has been pessimistic and bad, but Romney's stern corporate optimism (hm?) will be the light that leads us out of this mess. Are you listening, Iowa? Really particularly Iowa should be listening to this. Until after tomorrow, then everyone should be listening. (But especially people in New Hampshire.)

Related: The Hot Or Not Primary

Who It's For: Iowans.

What Everyone Else Sees: Blatant pandering to Iowans, awkward attempts to seem folksy.

The Effect: Obviously Romney needs to inspire more people than his typical businessy drone and lacquered-hair smarm tend to, but just literally rolling up one's sleeves and showing pretty pictures of flat farmland aren't exactly going to do that. Still, the photography is attractive and so is Mitt's wife, so this has probably won a heart or a mind somewhere in the Hawkeye State. B

The Ad: Michele Bachmann, "Michele's Voice"

The Issues: Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Barack Obama = Jimmy Carter

The Message: Michele Bachmann is the American Margaret Thatcher. That is basically what the entire ad is saying. Bachmann might be capitalizing on the new film The Iron Lady, though she should be careful about associating herself with known liberal Meryl Streep. We're not entirely sure why this is called "Michele's Voice" when Bachmann's voice isn't exactly the best thing about her, but oh well.

Who It's For: Voters (Iowa ones in particular) who are looking for a real political hero rather than just a politician.

What Everyone Else Sees: Somewhat delusional comparisons, an unpleasant voice.

The Effect: Bachmann's probably reaching the end of her presidential road, and so it's mostly just sad seeing her still hoping to be someone as huge as Margaret Thatcher (whether you liked her or not, the woman was a force). But at least she's got her bus friends to keep her company. C-

The Ad: Ron Paul, "Believe"

The Issues: Trust, Consistency, Big Government, Taxes

The Message: A bunch of diverse looking everyday Americans speak out in support of Ron Paul because he's something different, an outsider (with three decades of congress under his belt) who says "No" to all the fat cats. These aren't wacko tin foil hat libertarians, and they're not Kelly Clarkson either. They're just regular folks, folksy folks, homey folks, looking for something new and different. This is the human side of Ron Paul's big ideas.

Who It's For: People who think all Paul supporters are weirdos, people who still don't know what he's all about, Iowans unimpressed by the rest of the old guard in the race.

What Everyone Else Sees: Some of these people look like wackos.

The Effect: Paul has to walk a tricky line of trying to ingratiate himself to more centrist voters yet also sticking firm to his outsider, renegade image. Here he's probably wise to put a bunch of normals on display instead of himself ? if someone who looks like your second grade teacher could vote for Ron Paul maybe you could vote for Ron Paul ? but it might be too little normal too late. Why the Jeremy Clarkson Twitter Frenzy Shows Computer Don't Make You Clever

There was a time, not too long ago, when having a computer marked you out as being one of the clever folk. In addition to the computer, you had a white coat, glasses and your own bunsen burner with a plaque your parents had made to commemorate when you built the dog its own robotic exoskeleton at the age of four.

Now, the way you know you've been eating enough oily fish is if you've got your own Large Hadron Collider. A computer? Not so much. Never mind that NASA made it to the moon and back with the same computing capacity as a Tamagotchi, that laptop you're fiddling with on the sofa may be capable of breaking into the Pentagon and redistributing a nation's IDs, but it is simpler to use than velcro Adidas. Steve Jobs has ensured that all you need to work a computer is a basic command of pretty much any language and you're good to go. You don't even need to be able to type any more, you can just bellow at it from face down in bed.

But while our computers have the capacity, we have not kept pace. A great number of our functional needs are now taken care of in one place - basic office antics, shopping, not having to go to a garage for porn - but we have not evolved at the same speed.

The clearest illustration of this is in the swirling vortexes of mindless rage caused all over social media by the likes of, say, Jeremy Clarkson.

Well, not so much caused by Clarkson, as caused by people who have a bit of a beef with his woolly-haired self, who then froth up those who like to listen to those with a bit of a beef, further aided by those who follow/like/are nearby on the Croydon tram from the beefy types. By this point, the beef is more gristle, but its effect is such that this meaty ripple is washing up on far-flung shores.

Now Lord knows not everyone has the resources that journalists have (although we do all have mobile phones and barely anyone has bothered to password protect them), but in the case of the apparently ongoing war on Clarkson, the feeling is amongst those with computers that it's enough to believe their fellow computer users and research be damned.

Witness the One Show debacle. Just in time for the public sector strikes, up pops Clarkson calling for the strikers to be shot in front of their families. Cue a maelstrom of righteous indignation sufficient enough to all but sweep the strikes from the news.

And yet the BBC resisted calls for him to be publicly flogged, releasing the transcript of the show instead, just in case, perhaps, not everyone complaining had seen the full thing. Or, as was apparent from reading it, seen it at all. It was clear that Clarkson was mocking the BBC's need to appear balanced, by presenting two contrasting viewpoints. And not just clear to someone with a PhD in hidden meanings, but clear to the most basic intelligence. The piece even ended with Clarkson saying: "They're not [my views]. I've just given two views for you."

Since then Clarkson has landed in various spots of non-bother, most recently over the Top Gear Christmas special, with the burning torch-lighting aided this time by MP Keith Vaz, a man who recognises a bandwagon when he sees one.

Still, I'm not going to ring in the New Year defending Clarkson. He's three times my height and I think he can look after himself. What concerns me is that the immediacy of social networking is allowing many, otherwise clear-headed individuals to be sucked into frenzies which, if we witnessed them outside our computers, would have us slapping each others' faces to ward off hysteria.

It's so exciting, after all, to be part of something. These are social networks and we're a social bunch. Communication is the backbone of civilisation. But as well all learned (again) this summer, just because something is printed, doesn't make it so. If it seems unlikely that a national broadcaster would celebrate Christmas by allowing one of its most high-profile broadcasters to launch a 90-minute racist attack on another country, then maybe it is. Or maybe you live in North Korea and that's par for the course. Either way commit the brain before you commit the fingers.

India-China input a must in any major issue: Chinese Consul General

Describing the India-China relationship "noble," the Chinese Consul General in Mumbai Niu Qingbao today said here that without the input and support of the two countries, no major problem can be solved in the world.

India and China would have to work hard for a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution to the border issue, Niu said at a function organised by Indo-China Friends Association.

Asked about reports of Chinese incursions along the Indo-China border, he pointed out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself had stated that the Chinese "are not going to invade India".

Niu also dismissed as "negative propaganda" reports about China hacking Indian government websites and alleged "dumping" of Chinese goods in India.

Attempting to hack Indian government websites would be akin to "playing with fire," Niu said, noting India is more advanced in the information technology sector.

"China is not so dumb as to play with fire," he said. On the contrary, he said lakhs of Chinese computers were "remote-controlled by vicious sources" out of Chinese borders and China itself was a victim of computer hacking.

Regarding alleged "dumping" of Chinese goods in India, Niu agreed that China enjoyed trade surplus, the reason for which was advantage in manufacturing and Indian Visa restriction on Chinese business people.

Chinese machinery narrowed the gap between demand and supply in India, he said. Chinese infrastructure companies helped break bottleneck of growth in India and help develop industrialisation, he added.

He said now China-India friendship was indispensable for common development. The bilateral trade was 61.7 billion USD in 2010-11, which was 21 times more than what it was in 2000, he said. China was now India's largest trading partner and vice-versa, Niu said, adding there had been rapid growth on two-way investments also.

Guilty plea in muni bond indictments

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A politically connected financial firm and its founder pleaded guilty Friday to taking part in fraud and bid-rigging conspiracies related to the municipal bond business.

The Justice Department said CDR Financial Products Inc. of Beverly Hills, Calif., and owner David Rubin entered guilty pleas in federal court in Manhattan. The department said they acknowledged their roles in schemes designed to win contracts to invest the proceeds of municipal bonds issued by state, county and local governments.

Rubin faces up to 20 years in prison.

Two other CDR executives are scheduled to go on trial in New York next week.

CDR also was investigated for its ties to former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and business the company won in that state. No charges grew out of that investigation.

Rubin is the tenth person to plead guilty to criminal charges in the ongoing federal investigation of the municipal bonds industry, the department said. Eight others have been charged, including the two CDR executives.

The government so far has recovered $743 million in restitution and penalties from five banks, Bank of America Corp., UBS AG, JPMorgan Chase and Co., GE Funding Capital Market Services Inc. and Wachovia Bank, since acquired by Wells Fargo and Co.

Municipal bonds are issued to build schools, hospitals and roads in a $2.8 trillion market. About $100 billion of the proceeds from the bond sales each year are temporarily invested before being used for the original purpose of the sales.

The government launched a widespread investigation into the business of reinvesting municipal bond proceeds after Bank of America came forward and disclosed to authorities that its investment division paid for information that helped the bank gain an advantage with local governments that were looking to invest their proceeds from municipal bond sales. Because nearly all the municipal bonds involved were tax-exempt, they are regulated by the Internal Revenue Service.

In the CDR case, Rubin admitted that over eight years beginning in 1998, he provided information to financial institutions and insurance companies that helped win bids, intentionally solicited losing bids and also paid kickbacks in what was supposed to be a competitive situation, Justice said.

Rubin's guilty plea follows his failed effort to delay his trial because of his wife's worsening medical condition. In court papers, Rubin said Gail Rubin is in the final stages of a long fight with pancreatic cancer and asked to put off his trial until 35 days after her death. The Rubins have been married 26 years and have seven children, according to court papers.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero denied the request, a decision upheld by a panel of federal appellate judges in New York. Rubin and CDR, also known as Rubin/Chambers, Dunhill Insurance Services Inc., were first indicted in 2009.
